“This piece began as a group of 1/4″ rods tightly welded together at one end, which was then anchored to the ground. I wrestled with the rods for a few days, filling in some gaps with some recycled mesh along the way, and eventually this form arrived. It sways and bounces in the wind, giving life to the steel.”

Statement:

“I am an emerging artist working out of the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. I work mostly in welded steel, with some white oak, concrete, glass, and recycled objects mixed in occasionally. I pair an exacting craft with industrial materials, focusing on creating balance and delicacy where there typically isn’t. Through my work I want to reconnect adults to their playful, present selves that we so often lose in our work environments and hectic everyday lives. I learned how to weld as a teenager on a farm in the Texas countryside, albeit in a very purposeful capacity fixing tractor equipment and building cattle fences. The sparks, the heat, the power–it enticed me so much with how present you have to be in that moment with molten steel. It was such a flow state and so joyful, and I began to play with scraps, bringing my own ideas to life. After studying mechanical engineering in college and working various related jobs for over eight years, I finally committed to making art full time a little over a year ago.”
