Previous Something New Art Piece (No Longer Installed)
The sculpture I have submitted is an abstract form made from mild steel vaguely resembling a blade of grass, wave or stick. It captures a sense of movement or growth in the flowing overlapping pipe. Upon this abstract form crawls a giant isopod clad in mild steel and bronze driving the abstract form into the context of nature, life and death. The isopod eats the dead to return life to the soil. When contrasted with the movement of the form it calls to the transitory nature of life. The gathering of strength as one matures and giving up said strength as age strips us of vitality to return us once again to the womb of our mother earth. A great wave gathering strength only to crash onto the beach and return to the great oneness. As previously stated it was made almost entirely from mild steel, cut, mig welded and brazed with bronze. It’s base is 2’ by 2’ with a height of 7’. At the moment it is sans base but depending upon the installation space it can be welded to a base plate for mounting or have mounting brackets welded at the points needed to fit the pillar or plinth. I am hopeful and excited to have my art seen and give back and engage my community.

Statment:
It is difficult for me to write this. I left art school in my senior year as my physical and mental health failed me and as I realized I would never be able to support myself and provide the critical healthcare I required. Growing up with an invisible but crippling disability was difficult, learning that my society would see me only as a “useless eater” was crushing. Perhaps that’s why I see such kinship with the world beneath our feet. Without these insignificant specks crawling about we would cease to be. We live in a world where our entire purpose is to produce capital and if an action does not produce it is superfluous. I do not wish for fame. I do not hope for vast wealth. I only hope to create. I have broken down the walls that kept me from my divine task and have accepted my call to breathe yet more beauty into our world. The only question that remains is if my community views my journey, purpose and calling as valuable. Either way I will continue regardless.
